Windsor Regional Hospital is full at the Met campus and overcrowded at the Ouellete campus.
David Musyj, hospital president and CEO, said that Met is currently at 99 per cent occupancy and Ouellette is at 106 per cent. There are also 11 patients waiting for a bed in the emergency department at Ouellette. Musyj said lengthy stays are mainly to blame for the high volumes.
"Typically we do not see these increases for another month or more," he said. "Currently we have been approved to open 28 more 'surge beds' starting in November."
He hopes a provincial announcement on Wednesday brings more funding to help hospitals with the winter surge and supports services.
