UPDATE: House explosion injures one, displaces eight

Fire officials now say a house near downtown that caught fire Saturday was triggered by an explosion.

Windsor police say they were called, along with Windsor Fire and Rescue, to a multi-unit building on Church St. between Karl Place and Vera Place, on the western edge of the downtown core. The call came in around 5 p.m. Saturday.

One resident was taken to hospital with fire-related injuries and a total of eight residents have been displaced. There has been no word on the extent of the victim's injuries and the victim is not being identified.

The Ontario Fire Marshal's office sent a team to the scene late Saturday night. Windsor Fire confirmed via Twitter Sunday morning that an explosion took place.

The fire marshal's office sent an engineer to the scene to investigate further, and is working with Ontario Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) to find out what caused the explosion and ensuing fire.

Officials have not provided any additional information. More details will be passed along as they become available.
