Community Bike Kitchen opens in Walkerville

After months of uncertainty about its future, Bike Windsor Essex has a new home.

The Community Bike Kitchen is open on Monmouth Road near Wyandotte Street East. It is part of the Sho Studios Art Collective.

Members celebrated Wednesday night with a neighbourhood ride.

Bike Windsor-Essex was suddenly evicted by the Capitol Theatre last June and had planned to move into the former Snack Bar-B-Q on Chatham Street East. Those plans fell through when owner Mark Boscariol died.

The new shop will continue to offer workstations so cyclists can repair and maintain their bikes.

"This is a great space and location for us," said Mechanic Education Coordinator Oliver Swainson.

He said he would continue to hold mechanical education classes in the space.

By late winter, the group hopes to have a refurbished fleet of bicycles available for rental, and a full season of Saturday morning Explore Your City Rides.

Monday and Tuesday, the Community Bike Kitchen will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays and Sundays the hours are noon to 4 p.m.
