Nervous time for Chrysler Pacifica in the U.S. due to year-end slumping sales

U.S. sales of the Windsor-built Chrysler Pacifica minivan have been soft over the last several months but still managed to slightly surpass last year's totals.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) said it sold 118,322 minivans in the U.S. in 2018 compared to 118,274 in 2017.

December Pacifica sales took another big hit in the states. FCA sold 8,936 Pacificas last month compared to 11,144 during the same month a year ago. The automaker said that's a 20 per cent drop in sales from the previous December.

FCA reported last month that American sales of the Pacifica dropped 35 per cent in November compared to November of 2017. The automaker sold just over 8,500 Pacificas in November compared to more than 13,000 during the same period a year ago.

The Chrysler Pacifica posted record sales in October with the automaker reporting a 22 per cent jump to 9,277 minivans sold in the U.S. that month.

The U.S. is the biggest market for the Pacifica. FCA figures show that more Pacificas are sold in America in one month than the entire year in Canada.

Pacifica sales in Canada have steadily dropped over the last few months after breaking records in June and July.

Workers at the Windsor Assembly Plant are on layoff for the first two weeks of January to adjust high inventories, according to FCA. Production is scheduled to resume January 14.
