Wine country and digital influencer recognized at awards ceremony

The Windsor-Essex region was recognized in a big way at the Economic Developers' Council of Ontario's President's Dinner in Toronto.

Tourism Windsor Essex Pelee Island picked up an award for its collaboration with Essex Pelee Island Coast Wine Growers Association in the Collaboration and Partnership category. The two organizations were touted for celebrating 150 years of Canadian winemaking. Events included a public lecture, a museum exhibit, wine tasting, and a limited wine collection produced by ten local wineries.

Yvonne Pilon with the WEtech Alliance was named Digital Influencer of the Year.

TWEPI nominated her for being a catalyst for attracting tech talent and helping diversify the local economy.

"The Windsor-Essex region is blessed with great visionaries, and through these awards, we are able to shine on a provincial level," said Gordon Orr, the CEO of TWEPI. "From a tourist standpoint, her [Pilon's] accomplishments have been essential in fostering a 'sense of place' for visitors and residents alike, while assisting in the development of an authentic destination."

"It's truly amazing to see the impact that one simple social media post can have on a new and existing business or entrepreneur," said Pilon. "The #YQG hashtag, which Tourism Windsor Essex has embraced wholeheartedly, is being used in hundreds of social media posts, reaching over half a million unique accounts and nearly one-million impressions every single day."
