The province's law enforcement watchdog agency has cleared Windsor police following an incident that resulted in a suspect injuring himself.
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has completed its investigation in which a suspect claimed his leg was broken when a Windsor police officer attempted to help him put on a shoe in April 2018.
According to SIU Director Tony Loparco, the 38-year-old man was arrested by Windsor police in connection with a domestic incident and was then placed in a cell. The suspect asked the officers for his shoes back and proceeded to put the left shoe on without help. An officer then arrived to help the suspect with his right shoe, and the man claimed that his left leg was broken in the process.
As part of the investigation, SIU used video surveillance footage to determine exactly how it happened.
“The video evidence leads me to conclude that the man caused the injury to his left leg himself and that the injury was not the result of any police action. Accordingly, I have terminated the investigation into this incident," said Loparco.
