The National Day of Mourning is on Sunday and the local labour movement is holding memorial services to remember those killed in workplace tragedies.
A ceremony will be held on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Saint Augustine's Church Hall at Wyandotte and Westminster. A procession to Coventry Gardens will follow at 3 p.m. to the Injured Workers Monument at Riverside Drive and Pillette Road.
The Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) reported 228 people died in Ontario last year because of work.
"Every year the WSIB runs an awareness campaign in April dedicated to people who’ve suffered a workplace fatality, injury or illness and those they’ve left behind," said the WSIB in a statement. "We recognize that every day, millions of people go to work and too many of them never make the commute home."
The WSIB added that transit vehicles around the province have been covered with visual tributes to people who have died at work to reinforce the message. One of those buses is currently running in Windsor.
"The National Day of Mourning is an important time for Canadians to reinvigorate their commitment to health and safety at work," added the WSIB.
Every April 28th, Canada observes a National Day of Mourning for those who have been killed, injured or fallen ill because of work.
