Leamington closes tomato information booth

One of the most recognizable landmarks in Leamington is closing until further notice.

The Leamington District Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with the Municipality of Leamington, have decided to close the Tomato Visitor Information Booth over concerns of the current state of the structure.

The booth, referred to adoringly as the "Giant Tomato," has been in operation at the corner of Talbot Street West and Fox Street in Leamington for nearly 60 years.

According to a press release from the Municipality of Leamington, the booth was found to be in too poor of shape open up this season.

"Upon opening for the 2019 season, it was discovered that the structure had deteriorated into a state of disrepair since its closure in the fall of 2018 to such an extent that the Chamber was concerned for the safety of its volunteer ambassadors," the municipality said.

A condition assessment is currently underway on the structure to help determine its fate and develop a plan of action.

In the meantime, the municipality will be looking at other ways to deliver visitor information services to fill the gap for the missing tomato.
