Investigators are still trying to piece together the final days of her life, but they have identified the victim in the city's first homicide of the year.
The body of 63-year-old Gerardine Butterfield was found in her apartment on Wellington Avenue between University Avenue and Wyandotte Street West on the evening of Saturday, May 25. Police said she lived alone.
Officers were responding to a call of a deceased woman that evening, but police have not said who made the call to police.
Investigators hope by releasing Butterfield's name someone will remember a key piece of information leading to an arrest in the case.
Soon after the discovery, police canvassed the neighbourhood and interviewed some witnesses.
An autopsy was also conducted, but a cause of death has not been released.
Anyone with information about the days leading up to Butterfield's death should call the Major Crime Unit at 519-255-6700 ext. 4830. Anonymous tipsters can call Crime Stoppers at 519-258-8477 or leave information online at www.catchcrooks.com.
