Windsor police say a collision over the weekend could have had fatal consequences.
A 19-year-old man is facing a handful of charges after a single-vehicle crash involving a car with multiple occupants.
It happened around 2:30 a.m. Sunday, according to investigators. Officers arrived in the area of Howard Avenue and McDougall Street to find a BMW that had catastrophic front-end damage resting in the parking lot on the southwest side of the intersection, with a large field of debris leading to it from McDougall. Police say this indicated that the BMW was travelling southbound on McDougall when it failed to complete a left turn, jumped the curb, then hit a number of parking lot curbs before coming to a stop. The BMW then burst into flames.
The six occupants were all able to flee the vehicle. They were all treated in hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Ricardo Siwak of Windsor is alleged to have been the driver, according to police. He is facing two counts each of impaired driving causing bodily harm, dangerous operation causing bodily harm, and operating a vehicle while exceeding the legal limit of alcohol in the blood. These charges have not yet been proven in court.
Windsor police Public Information Officer Sergeant Steve Betteridge said it was nothing short of a miracle that no one was seriously injured or killed in this incident.
"This incident could have ended tragically," Betteridge said in a media release. "We are thankful that none of the six occupants was killed, or anyone else using the roadway at the time of the offence."
