Math continues to be a struggle for many Grade 6 students in the region.
Only 47 per cent of Grade 6 students at the Greater Essex County District School Board who took the EQAO test last year met the provincial standard. While at the Windsor Essex County District School Board 58 per cent of Grade 6students met the standard.
When the same group of students took the EQAO in Grade 3 in 2015-2016 58 per cent met the provincial average at the public board while 65 per cent met the provincial standard at the Catholic board.
Clara Howitt with the public board said that seems to be the trend but math scores improve again by the time students reach Grade 9.
"There is something that happens between primary and junior but then they regain momentum again [in Grade 9 test scores] so I think that's a sign of continued learning and maturity," said Howitt.
While the numbers seem low they are consistent with schools across the province.
Reading and writing scores in Grade 6 remain consistent with around 80 per cent of GECDSB students reaching the provincial standard. Around 85 per cent of students at the WECDSB reached the provincial standard in reading and writing.
