Jobless rate up half a percentage point in Windsor in October

According to Statistics Canada, 900 people in Windsor joined the search for a job last month.

The unemployment rate increased half a percentage point from September to 6.7 per cent.

The Labour Participation Rate also rose to 61.3 per cent, an increase of 0.6 per cent.

Nationally, the jobless rate did not change. It remained at 5.5 per cent last month, the same as in September.

When applied to American criteria, the Canadian unemployment rate was 4.4 per cent. In the U.S., it was 3.6 per cent.

There were 23,000 net job losses in manufacturing, mostly in Ontario, and in construction, the number of positions fell 21,000.

The public sector grew by 29,000 positions, while the number of self-employed people fell by 28,000.

In Ontario, the jobless rate was 5.3 per cent, down three-tenths of a percentage point.
