Charges laid after boating mishap in Belle River

A boating accident on Lake St. Clair this weekend has resulted in charges and a serious injury.

The Ontario Provincial Police said two men got their legs caught in the boat's propeller after tubing just off Belle River Marina on Saturday afternoon. One victim was injured by the propeller while trying to get into the boat while the other victim was hurt trying to help the first victim.

Police said a 22-year-old man remains in the hospital with serious injuries while a 23-year-old man was treated and released from the hospital after suffering minor injuries.

The OPP added there were nine people on the 21-foot boat.

The 22-year-old boat operator from Lakeshore has been charged with operating a vessel in an unsafe manner, operating a vessel with an unapproved life-saving device, operating a powered pleasure craft without proper safety equipment on-board, having care and control of a boat with cannabis readily available, and having care and control of a moving boat with open liquor on-board.

The suspect's name has not been made public.
