The flu season in Windsor-Essex has claimed its first life.
The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit confirmed Wednesday the first influenza-related death of the 2019-2020 season. Only one flu death was recorded during the previous season.
Dr. Wajid Ahmed, the WECHU's medical officer of health, is reiterating the need for people to protect themselves from the flu and get that flu shot.
"As always it’s important to be protected from the risks associated with the flu season in Ontario," said Ahmed. "Lower your risk and the risk of those around you by getting the flu vaccine. The best time to get vaccinated is now.”
The health unit said while most people may not feel sick and don't feel they need the shot, the vaccine has substantial long-term benefits. Those who get vaccinated each year find their resistance to the flu increased and are thus less likely to pass it on to family members, friends, and co-workers.
The flu shot is free and can be obtained at most clinics, doctor's offices, and pharmacies. Other ways to protect yourself include frequent hand-washing and hand sanitizer use, eating a nutritious, well-balanced diet, and getting plenty of sleep. And if you're sick, stay home.
