Municipalities prepare for major winter storm

Municipalities throughout Windsor Essex are preparing for this weekend's major winter storm.

Environment Canada has predicted at least 10 centimetres of snow from Friday night into mid-afternoon Saturday.

The salters will be out early to help keep roads free of ice.

In the City of Windsor, once five centimetres of snow has fallen, the plows will come out. It takes plows, on average, three to six hours to travel their routes.  Once the main roads are clear, and if there is only 10 cm of snow, the plows will then move into residential areas.

The Town of Lakeshore is asking all residents to remove vehicles from the roadways to leave ample room for snowplows. In Lakeshore, major arterial roads will be plowed first before plows head into any subdivisions.

If you are driving and come up behind a plow,  you are asked to be patient. The plows typically move at 40 kilometres per hour and drivers who follow too close will have reduced visibility. Their vehicle could also be hit by flying snow, rocks, and ice.

It is the responsibility of property owners to make sure the sidewalks in front of their homes or businesses are clear of snow and ice. Businesses in the city have four hours to shovel their sidewalks, while homeowners have 12.  Lakeshore residents have 24 hours to clear their sidewalks.

It is also illegal to shovel snow back onto the roads.
