With an overnight low of -12 C, -18 C with the windchill, anticipated early Tuesday morning, the City of Windsor is reminding the homeless there are places to get out of the cold.
For single women and families, the Welcome Centre Shelter for Women on Bridge Avenue will be open. Men can seek refuge at The Salvation Army on Church Street. Anyone experiencing homelessness can also go to the Downtown Mission on Ouellette Avenue.
During the day, local community centres and public libraries throughout the city are open.
For those out in the county who are eligible for emergency shelter services in the city, transportation can be provided by calling 211.
The 211 helpline can also assist those living on a low-income who may not have adequate heat in their homes.
The public can help keep everyone safe during cold weather by calling 911 if they are concerned about someone outside during extreme cold. Remember, frostbite or hypothermia is a medical emergency.
Extreme Cold Weather Alerts are issued when the temperature dips to -27 C with or without the windchill for one day. Factors, including precipitation and how many days a cold snap is expected to last, are also considered when health officials issue an alert.
Infants, young children, the elderly, those who work outside, the homeless, and those with a pre-existing heart or respiratory illness are more at risk in the cold.
