There's more funding available for companies in the automotive and manufacturing sector to create paid work placements.
The Ontario Government announced $14 million in funding to create 4,000 paid work placements. This is the second round of funding for the Career Ready Fund Auto Stream. The first round created 1,000 positions for $5 million.
Minister of Labour Monte McNaughton said the opportunities would be created for postsecondary students, recent graduates, and apprentices.
"New technologies and modern processes mean businesses need workers with more advanced skill sets than ever before. Finding workers with these new skill sets is extremely important for the sector, I'm glad to say that we're helping out," said McNaughton.
The goal of the program is to attract youth to the skilled trades and fill the many available jobs throughout Ontario.
"It's costing Ontario every single year by having 200,000 jobs vacant, $24 billion in economic GDP," said McNaughton.
While announcing the funding Tuesday morning at Cavalier Tool & Manufacturing Ltd. in Windsor, the government has put out a call for proposals from original equipment manufacturers, post-secondary institutions, and supply chain manufacturers to create these positions.
"A lot of these government programs are great avenues that open the doors to allow us to bring some of these people in," said Brian Bendig, president and owner of Cavalier Tool & Manufacturing Ltd.
Automotive manufacturing and advanced manufacturing companies with a footprint in the auto sector, industry associations, post-secondary institutions, and other not-for-profit organizations are encouraged to submit proposals through the Transfer Payment Ontario website.
