Two arrests have been made in what Windsor police called a significant fraud investigation.
Detectives with the Windsor Police Financial Crimes Unit began a probe last week after receiving a fraud report from a financial institution. It was determined that three fraudulent cheques totalling $1 million were deposited at ATMs across the city. A portion of the money was then withdrawn, then transferred to an account before the drafts came back as being without sufficient funds.
Constable Talya Natyshak said that investigators realized that the fraudulent cheques, and the money that was withdrawn, were related to a business on Tecumseh Road East near Jefferson Boulevard. From this, two suspects were identified, arrested, and charged with one count each of fraud over $5,000.
The first suspect, a woman, was arrested on Thursday. The second, a man, was arrested on Friday. Both were released from custody with a future court date.
Natyshak said no individuals were victimized in this case, and it appeared the financial institution was the only victim. Neither the suspects nor the business connected to this case has been identified.
Police are using this incident to remind people to be vigilant with their finances. Do not give out any personal information to someone you don't know or trust. If you think you have been duped, contact the police immediately.
