Kingsville's 2020 budget includes slight tax hike

Kingsville residents will pay just a tad more in property taxes in 2020.

Town councillors have signed off on Kingsville's 2020 municipal budget, which had been under deliberation for several weeks. The spending plan includes a municipal tax rate increase of 1.4 per cent. However, when combined with education and county tax rates, the increase works out to just half a per cent.

Mayor Nelson Santos said he was extraordinarily pleased with the thoroughness put into the budget by the administration.

"There were considerable thought and review that went into this year's budget, and it showed," said Santos. "There are some monumental capital works set for this year that will serve as key infrastructure investments that will strengthen our communities across the municipality."

The budget includes funding for a variety of projects in 2020, including the reconstructions of Jasperson Drive and Main Street West, a new playground at Millbrook Park, and a new "E-Send" project, which will allow residents to receive their tax and water bills by email. Ryan McLeod, Kingsville's financial services director, said the budget reflects the town's desire to continue economic growth.

"This budget delivers on the town's strategic goals to increase funding for infrastructure renewal, enhances parks and recreational opportunities, while at the same time providing our residents with stable, predictable tax rates," said McLeod.

Kingsville will invest $5 million from current year taxation into capital projects.

The town council passed the budget in principle on January 29. For the entire 2020 budget, visit the town of Kingsville's official website.
