Warning about unapproved smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors

Windsor Fire and Rescue Services is warning the public to check their smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors to make sure they are approved for use in Ontario.

During recent inspections, officials found some that are not approved, and may not meet Canadian requirements.

It should say on the package if they are approved. You can find a list of approved markings online.

Fire officials remind the public smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors save lives. They provide early warning if a fire breaks out in your home.

They should be tested once a month, and the batteries changed out at least once a year.

Smoke alarms that are more than ten years old should also be replaced.
