Health unit issues 1,400 suspension notices

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit has suspended 1,400 elementary school students because their immunization records are incomplete.

"The Immunization of School Pupils Act requires public health units to maintain and review vaccine records for every student attending school and to enforce a school suspension for incomplete immunization information," said Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Wajid Ahmed.

Walk-in immunization clinics are being offered at the health unit's offices in Windsor and Leamington this week.

Parents can bring in their child's records in person between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. each day this week, and doctors can fax them to the health unit.

"I'm hopeful that parents and guardians will provide up to date immunization records of their children so the suspensions can be lifted quickly," said Ahmed.

Once parents or doctors submit the information, the records will be updated, and the school principal will be informed.
