Michigan residents ordered to stay home

As of 12:01 a.m. on Tuesday, and for the next three weeks, Michigan residents will have to stay in their homes.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed the "Stay Home, Stay Safe" executive order Monday morning, enacting strict new restrictions to stop the spread of COVID-19.

The bill directs "all Michigan businesses and operations to temporarily suspend in-person operations that are not necessary to sustain or protect life."

The order describes essential workers as those who work in healthcare, public health, law enforcement, and grocery store workers.

Under the order, residents in Michigan are only allowed to leave their homes if they are an essential worker, engaged in an outdoor activity on their property, going to the hospital, or the grocery store.

When they do go out, they "must adhere to social distancing measures -- including remaining at least six feet from people outside the individual's household."

Over the past 13 days, WXYZ reports 1,232 cases have been confirmed. Of those, health officials told the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit, 325 are in Detroit.

On Sunday afternoon, the tally was 1,035 cases and eight deaths. Now, 15 people have died in Michigan, and 390 across the U.S. according to a poll conducted by Reuters.

Reuters also said there were more than 33,000 cases across the U.S.

All public and private gatherings of any number of people that do not live in the same household are prohibited.

Other states have also taken drastic measures to slow the spread of the virus through executive orders designed to enforce social distancing. Ohio, New York, Illinois, California, and Pennsylvania amongst them.
