Windsor offers brochure, sandbags to prepare for flooding

With lake levels elevated once again, the City of Windsor is providing written guidance to many east side residents.

City officials have published a free brochure for some 17,000 residents in the Riverside and East Riverside sections, providing up-to-date tips on what to do in the event of a major flood, and how to protect homes from damage. The brochure is also available on the city's official website.

The leaflet has information on what residents should do if a major flood occurs and if they are ordered to evacuate. There are also tips on preparing your home, an explanation of the different flood warning types, and who to call if residents need help.

Sandbags will be distributed to residents who live along the north side of Riverside Drive from George Avenue east to the border with the Town of Tecumseh. This section of the city was chosen due to the highest likelihood of a flood taking place. Residents from those addresses are asked to call 311 during regular business hours weekdays, and an appointment can be set up to meet city staff at the sandbag station. Appointments will be scheduled between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. weekdays. There is a limit of 100 sandbags per day per home.

The sandbag station is located at 9410 Little River Rd. Residents will be asked to show proof of address and to check in with a member of staff every time they visit. Assistance with filling sandbags will be available starting Tuesday.

Complete information on lake and river flooding, and on basement flooding prevention, can be found on the City of Windsor's official website.
