Windsor to benefit from nationwide food partnership

A nationwide partnership to help fight hunger is also helping people in Windsor.

Sunwing Airlines is teaming up with Second Harvest to donate 46,000 meals in 17 communities across Canada, with Windsor being one of them. Second Harvest is the country's largest food rescue organization.

Stephen Hunter, CEO of Sunwing Travel Group, said the carrier is hoping to make a difference while travel operations are on hold. With all the attention focused on the COVID-19 pandemic, Hunter said those who are having trouble keeping food in the cupboards shouldn't have another thing to be anxious about.

"We know Canadians are worried about their health and safety, but they shouldn’t have to worry about putting food on the table. Working with an incredible organization like Second Harvest gives us the opportunity to continue to help Canadians even as our operations are temporarily suspended," he said.

Windsor will get 400 of those meals.

Among the food items to be distributed are smoked meat sandwiches, pizza, sausage rolls and breakfast sandwiches. Lori Nikkel of Second Harvest said the Sunwing donation will help a lot of people.

"During this crisis in particular, when so many people are at risk of going hungry, we can’t afford to let food go to waste,” said Nikkel. “We thank Sunwing for their commitment to Canadians and their meaningful food donation that will help ensure Canadians everywhere have access to healthy food."

Sunwing has already played a huge role in easing the effects of the pandemic. Employees sent over 400 flights to dozens of destinations in the Western Hemisphere, bringing home over 60,000 Canadians, including 3,300 non-Sunwing customers, at no cost to them.
