City alters garbage collection rules

The City of Windsor is lightening its waste pickup restrictions as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Starting Monday and running until May 15, every household can place up to two extra garbage bags that are not in hard-sided containers with their garbage on their scheduled collection day.

"While hard-sided containers are always preferred, during this special month of collections, crews will pick up a maximum of two extra bags that are not in pails," city officials stated in a media release.

The city is requesting that each bag be strong enough to securely hold its contents, weight no more than 44 pounds, be tied at the top, not contain any sharp objects, paint, batteries or household chemicals and be placed directly next to the garbage pails.

Residents are reminded that all waste is to be set out by 6 a.m. on scheduled collection days.  Pickup may be somewhat delayed with the addition of more garbage to be collected on the route. If garbage is not collected by 8 p.m., residents are asked to call 311 to report a missed collection.

Residents can also request bulk collection by calling 311.

“I know that many residents are trying to stay busy - taking the time to clean out their basements, attics and garages, as we are all staying close to home” said Mayor Drew Dilkens. “This is just another way that the City of Windsor can make it just a little bit easier for residents at this challenging time.”
