Ontario Provincial Police have charged several drivers this week for using Essex County roads as their own personal racetrack.
In each incident, the driver's licence was suspended and their vehicle was towed and impounded in accordance with the Ontario Highway Traffic Act.
The first driver was stopped on Tuesday around 1 p.m. on North Talbot Road in Lakeshore. The OPP officer stopped a vehicle for travelling at double the posted 60 kilometres per hour speed limit, according to Constable Jim Root.
The second was stopped around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday by a Leamington OPP officer who observed a speeding vehicle on Robson Road. The vehicle was clocked going in excess of 130 km/h in a 50 km/h zone.
Around 11 a.m. Wednesday, a vehicle going eastbound on Highway 401 in Tecumseh was stopped for going at least 70 km/h over the posted 100 km/h limit.
With highway use down due to the stay-at-home guidelines imposed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the OPP said there is a tendency for drivers to take advantage. Drivers are warned of the consequences of this type of aggressive driving.
