Many students tapping Lambton College pandemic bursary

A new emergency relief bursary for Lambton College students impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic is receiving a lot of applications.

Lambton College Communications Director Cindy Buchanan said they launched the bursary earlier this month to help many of their students facing financial hardship due to the outbreak.

"So through the generosity of the government and individuals and organizations in the community, Lambton College was able to provide some immediate support through some non-repayable bursaries," said Buchanan. "The amount of bursary can vary on student circumstances and the number of students who apply, but we have $750,000 in total support that is available."

Buchanan said applications will be accepted until April 24 or until funding has been depleted.

"We don't have the final number of applicants yet as the bursary application is still open, but to date, we've had a lot of applications."

Earlier this month, in response to a student-led petition, the college said it would not be offering partial tuition and fee refunds for the winter semester.

Buchanan said there is a high degree of consistency across the Ontario college system as the 24 schools strive to meet the needs of their students.

On Wednesday, the federal government announced an additional $9 billion in spending to help students through the COVID-19 pandemic.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is promising students $1,250 per month through the new Canadian Emergency Student Benefit. Trudeau said the program for post-secondary students will run from May to August.
