Health unit reports 12 new COVID-19 cases

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit is reporting 12 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the total in the community to 569.

There have been 5,679 people in the community tested for the virus and 916 are still awaiting their results. Medical Officer of Health Dr. Wajid Ahmed said an increase in testing and a delay in processing at the lab in London are contributing to the high number of pending tests in the community.

While Premier Doug Ford and the provincial government are starting discussions about reopening the economy, Dr. Ahmed said he'd like to see no new cases in the community before moving forward.

"I would like to see no cases for a number of days before we get to talk about the reopening of everything," said Dr. Ahmed. "A gradual opening, I think that may not be completely out of the cards at this stage but we have to be careful."

To date, 139 people have recovered from the virus. The community has lost 38 people to the disease. The health unit is currently managing outbreaks at five long-term care facilities.
