Ontario's law enforcement watchdog agency has cleared Windsor police in an incident last year in which a suspect was injured.
It happened on the evening of August 6, 2019 in a parking lot at Riverside Drive West and Caron Avenue. Windsor police officers on routine patrol spotted a man appearing to urinate in public and stopped to question him. It was soon revealed that the man had several outstanding warrants.
The officers tried to arrest the man, but he took off with police in pursuit. The suspect was soon arrested after a struggle. During the course of the pursuit, the man broke a finger on his left hand.
The man was treated in hospital for the fracture.
Joseph Martino, director of the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), indicated in the report issued Thursday that officers did not commit an offence during the arrest.
"On my assessment of the evidence, there are no reasonable grounds to believe that the [officer] committed a criminal offence in connection with the complainant’s arrest and injury," wrote Martino.
The complete report is available on the official SIU website.
