Over 1,300 COVID-19 tests pending in Windsor Essex

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit is reporting 18 new cases of COVID-19 in the region and three additional deaths.

Over the weekend, three people died at long-term care homes in the community. A woman in her 90s, a woman in her 80s, and a man in his 60s succumbed to the virus.

The health unit is now managing outbreaks at eight long-term care and retirement facilities in the region. An outbreak was declared at the Village of St. Clair over the weekend after a staff member tested positive for the virus.

There are 1,379 people in the region waiting for their test results.

"We want to get the test results as quickly as possible. There are a number of conversations happening at multiple levels and I have raised this concern with various levels of the government as well that we need those test results back quickly," said Dr. Wajid Ahmed, medical officer of health for Windsor-Essex.

Wajid said capacity at the lab is improving and he expects improvements to continue over the next number of days. He said the health unit receives around 300-400 test results daily.

As of Monday morning, 8,175 people in the community had been tested for the virus. There have been 641 confirmed cases, 202 people have recovered and 54 people have passed away from the disease.
