Provincial police across Essex County were able to take five alleged impaired drivers off of the roads on Saturday.
Around 2:30 a.m. on Saturday, an OPP officer was conducting radar enforcement on County Road 22 in Lakeshore. During that time, a vehicle was stopped for travelling 159 kilometres per hour in an 80 km/h zone.
According to police, the officer suspected that the driver had consumed alcohol and administered a breathalyzer test, which the driver failed. As a result, a 23-year-old from Windsor was arrested and charged with stunt driving as well as operation while impaired.
Elsewhere, OPP in Kingsville got a call about a possible impaired driver around 3 a.m. Officers located the vehicle driving erratically on Road 7 East.
After speaking with the driver, police believed that they were showing signs of impairment. As a result, the driver was arrested and taken to the Leamington OPP detachment where they provided samples over the legal limit. A 47-year-old from Leamington was charged with two counts of impaired driving.
Provincial police in Leamington also nabbed an impaired driver around 3 a.m. on Saturday.
Officers noticed a vehicle driving erratically on Talbot Street East and conducted a traffic stop. According to police, it was apparent that the driver had been drinking and was showing signs of impairment.
The driver was arrested for impaired operation and taken to the Leamington OPP detachment where they provided samples over the legal limit. As a result, a 43-year-old from Leamington was charged with two counts of impaired driving.
Also in Leamington, a 41-year-old is accused of driving while impaired after officers were called about a traffic complaint on Saturday, around 4 a.m.
The vehicle in question was found on Antonio Court in Leamington. The driver was arrested and later charged with operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs, and operation while impaired - 80 plus blood alcohol concentration.
Lastly, a pedestrian helped police in taking an alleged drunk driver off the road.
Police said a vehicle was reportedly driving erratically in the area of Seacliff Drive West and Sherk Street around 6 a.m. on Saturday. Once the driver stopped at a stop sign, the pedestrian removed the keys and called OPP.
Once officers arrived, the driver was taken to the Leamington OPP detachment where they provided samples over the legal limit. A 45-year-old from Leamington has been charged with operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs, and operation while impaired - 80 plus blood alcohol concentration.
None of the charges have been proven in court. All five people have been given a future court date to answer to the charges.
