Another 35 cases of COVID-19 and a workplace outbreak in Windsor

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit reported another big spike in COVID-19 cases Tuesday and a new workplace outbreak in Windsor.

There were 35 cases confirmed since the last report. Of those new cases, eight are linked to the agricultural sector, three are local health care workers, nine were contracted in the community, and 15 remain under investigation.

Medical Officer of Health Dr. Wajid Ahmed said he is urging caution in the community as they assess whether the region can move on to Stage 3 of reopening the economy.

"We want to make sure that our community is taking all of the precautions that we need to, to prevent any surge in the community cases or have more cases outside of the agri-farm sector," said Dr. Ahmed.

The health unit also confirmed an outbreak linked to a manufacturing business in Windsor, making it the first outbreak in the city.

There are six agricultural businesses currently experiencing outbreaks and one manufacturing facility in Leamington.

Health unit officials report around 3,000 to 4,000 COVID-19 tests are done in Windsor-Essex each week. Dr. Ahmed is requesting people use the online portal whenever possible to access their test results.

"We remind residents that there are other sources for you to get the results. Public health staff resources are dedicated to reaching out to the positives and doing the case and contact management," said Dr. Ahmed.

If a person does not have access to the internet, they should call the service provider that conducted the test and not the health unit to receive their results.
