Windsor Public Library moves to tackle racism from within

The Windsor Public Library is moving to address racism from within by adopting an Anti-Racism Action Plan.

The library's board of directors approved it last Monday.

"Public libraries have always played a crucial role in supporting and advocating for diversity in the communities they serve," said CEO Kitty Pope. "I am proud that the Windsor Public Library will work to eliminate racial and social barriers to library programs -- plus acquire resources that reflect the rich diversity of the Windsor community."

Highlights of the plan include a review of the process to appoint citizens to city agencies, boards, and commissions to increase diversity, and embark on an effort before the next municipal election to encourage citizens from all sectors of the community to apply to be a board member.

The plan's conclusion states that the Windsor Public Library has a responsibility to eradicate systemic racism and social inequity and promote universal acceptance through equitable access to resources, services, and facilities.

Staff will be educated about racial injustice and social equity, and policies, procedures, and services will be redesigned to promote inclusion.
