Two mosquito pools found in Windsor-Essex

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit has identified the first source of West Nile Virus of the summer.

The health unit said Monday afternoon that two positive pools of mosquitos had been found during routine monitoring.

Medical officer of health Dr. Wajid Ahmed said that although there have not been any positive cases of West Nile Virus in the region so far this year, it doesn't hurt to be vigilant and protect yourself from the bugs.

"This is a good reminder for everyone to remove any standing water and to take personal protective measures to avoid mosquito bites," said Ahmed in a media release.

The health unit also reminded residents that these positive mosquito pools are an indicator that the virus continues to exist in our community. West Nile Virus is a severe infection that is spread by certain types of mosquitos.

Protect yourself by using insect repellents that contain DEET, Icaridin, or other approved ingredients; wearing long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and a hat while outdoors; and removing water from places like birdbaths, buckets, pet water dishes, gutters, and old tires.

If you come across a pool of standing water, contact your local municipality's by-law enforcement, or call 311.
