The annual Coats for Kids campaign is only collecting monetary donations this year because of COVID-19.
The Unemployed Help Centre will be collecting funds and issuing vouchers to families in need of warm outerwear this winter.
It is working closely with the local school boards.
"As we receive these monetary donations, we will give the schools the vouchers, so the families can go pick a coat out for their child," said Chief Executive Officer June Muir.
Last year, the Unemployed Help Centre distributed over 5,000 coats.
"It's hard to put a figure to this, but we do know that the need is going to increase, as the situation in Windsor is that there's still a lot of people not working," said June Muir.
To start off the campaign, Unifor Local 444 Retirees Council and the Windsor Essex Chatham Ken Unifor Retired Workers Area Council donated $4,500.
Donations can be made over the phone or online through the Unemployed Help Centre website. Muir said to make sure you indicate the donation is for the Coats for Kids campaign
Donations will be collected throughout winter.
