Police identify suspect in sexual assault case

The Ontario Provincial Police in Lakeshore has now identified a suspect in the sexual assault of a young girl.

On Wednesday, police said they had arrested a suspect after a member of the public recognized his face from a composite sketch released over the weekend.

Last week, they said a young girl was approached by an elderly man while riding her bike on Broadway Street in Belle River.

After striking up a conversation, the man is alleged to have kissed the girl several times against her will. She was able to get away, and reported the incident to her parents.

On Tuesday, the OPP arrested 77-year-old Saleem Hirmiz of Lakeshore.

He faces charges of sexual assault on a person under the age of 16 and sexual interference.

The charges have not been proven in court.
