WECHU reports 51 new cases of COVID-19

Community transmission of COVID-19 is a growing concern in Windsor-Essex with 20 per cent of current cases not linked to other confirmed cases.

"Obviously if that number increases it means that there are more cases out there in the community who we are not aware of, they themselves are not aware of, and they continue to spread the disease," said Medical Officer of Health Dr. Wajid Ahmed.

On Friday, the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit reported 51 new cases of COVID-19 in the community. Among the new cases, 22 were close contacts of a confirmed case, six were community-acquired, three were travel-related, two were agricultural workers, and two were healthcare workers. The health unit continues to investigate 16 cases.

There are 354 active cases in the community. Fourteen people are receiving treatment in the hospital, two of whom are in the intensive care unit.

The health unit is currently monitoring 14 outbreaks in the community, in schools, workplaces and long-term care facilities.
