The fire started around 9:30 p.m. at a house on California Avenue between Fanchette Street and University Avenue West.
Fire officials said it started on the front porch when smoking materials were not disposed of properly.
The fire caused about $200,000 damage.
The man was charged in March with sexual assault offences.
Both couples won in the April 11 draw.
