The Canadian Federation of Teachers thinks teachers and education workers should be near the top of the list for the COVID-19 vaccine.
Healthcare workers and residents in long-term care homes are already considered a top priority. However, the federation says those in education are at high risk of exposure too.
"They are in close contact with students and other adults, indoors, for many hours at a time, every day, usually with poor ventilation," it said. "Even if schools try to maintain social distance, the reality is that sufficient physical distancing -- is not possible."
Adding to their argument, Health Canada has not authorized the vaccine for students under 16.
"Given how essential it is that school buildings remain open for all students to learn to the best of their ability -- it is imperative that teachers and education workers be prioritized," added CTF President Shelley L. Morse.
