UPDATE: COVID-19 cases linked to Windsor-Essex schools

More COVID-19 cases have been linked to schools in the region and an outbreak has been declared at a Tecumseh elementary school.

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit declared an outbreak at L’Essor Catholic Elementary School on Friday evening.

According to the health unit, there are currently at least two confirmed cases of COVID-19 in a single classroom.

As a precaution, the entire class was previously dismissed and asked to isolate for a period of 14-days and get tested for COVID-19. The outbreak is currently limited to a single cohort that was already dismissed last week.

"The entire class cohort is considered high-risk for exposure to COVID-19 and The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit is working closely with the school and le Conseil Scolaire Catholique Providence administrators to manage the outbreak," the health unit said in a media release. "The school has already sent parents and guardians a notice about the exposure, which includes additional public health guidance."

At this time, all other students and staff are deemed low-risk. All individuals are advised to self-monitor for symptoms of COVID-19 and contact their health care provider or assessment centre if they develop symptoms.

Meanwhile, the Windsor Essex Catholic District School Board reported single confirmed cases of COVID-19 at Cardinal Carter Catholic Secondary School, Catholic Central High School, and Holy Names Catholic High School.

The Greater Essex County District School Board's COVID report shows a staff member at both Maxwell Public School and Roseville Public School has tested positive for the virus.  A second student at Sandwich Secondary School has also tested positive for the virus.

Since all schools in the region have switched to remote classes, there is no need for any school cohorts to be dismissed.

However, students and staff who may have been in contact with these individuals will be contacted by the Windsor Essex County Health Unit and told to self-isolate if necessary.

There are currently two school outbreaks being monitored by the health unit.
