The Windsor Essex County Health Unit reported a record 243 new cases of COVID-19 in the region Friday.
Health unit officials also reported a woman in her 60s passed away from the virus. She is the 95 person in Windsor-Essex to die due to COVID-19.
There are 1,014 active cases being followed by the health unit.
"At this time the cases are coming from everywhere, there are 27 active outbreaks that we have right now, there is ongoing community transmission, there are cases that are happening in households with one individual getting sick and then infecting all of the close family members, so it puts everyone at risk. There is no single source at this time," said Medical Officer of Health Dr. Wajid Ahmed.
Dr. Ahmed said the continued increase of cases is a clear indicator that people are not following the public health measures put in place to help protect the community.
"Stay home, do not leave, only leave for essential reasons otherwise stay home. Do not meet with anyone who doesn't live inside your house. It is that simple," said Dr. Ahmed.
Local hospitals are treating 66 confirmed cases of COVID-19 with 14 of the patients in the intensive care unit. There are another 71 people admitted in the hospital who are suspected cases of the virus.
In the last week, there have been approximately 9,828 tests completed in the region. Around 6.3 per cent of the tests are positive. This is the second-highest positivity rate in the province.
