Leamington buys land to develop affordable housing

The Municipality of Leamington said it plans to develop two new parcels of land into affordable housing.

The properties are on Talbot Street West at the site of the former Leamington District Secondary School, and on Mill Street East where the former Mill Street Public School was located.

Those schools closed in 2017.

"The provision of suitable housing to meet the diverse needs of Leamington's population is a fundamental component of the Municipality's Strategic Plan," said Chief Administrative Officer Peter Neufeld.

The land is also earmarked for other, unnamed, long-term goals.

"Not every community has an opportunity like this one to see the beginning of a resolution to the housing crisis that is a national problem, not just ours," added Mayor Hilda MacDonald.

As the plans progress, the Municipality plans to bring forward development plans and details about the partners involved in the projects.
