WECHU staff ready to support local schools as students return to class

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit is ready to continue to support schools as students return to the classroom.

Some school nurses were redeployed to the vaccine rollout while schools were closed, however they are ready to resume their roles as soon as schools reopen.

“As the schools reopen people will be redeployed back to supporting the schools. We had good processes in place when schools first opened and we will continue to use those,” said CEO and Chief Nursing Officer Theresa Marentette. “Everything is kind of happening at the same time, but with our lower numbers, with case and contact management, people have been able to be helping in other areas. So we seem to be in a good position right now with schools reopening.”

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit reported 20 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday along with two additional deaths linked to the virus.

Two men, one in his 80s and one in his 90s, who lived in the general community passed away after contracting the virus.

“As we continue to see cases decline in the community we are thankful to the community for continuing to follow all of the public health measures,” said Medical Officer of Health Dr. Wajid Ahmed. “People are still dying as a result of the surge that we had last month and we want to make sure we don’t see that again. As cases are declining, it is really important that these public health measures they are not all or none, there has to be an ongoing emphasis on following these public health measures.”

There are 402 known active cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex. Local hospitals are treating 59 people with the virus, nine are in the intensive care unit.
