WECHU reports three more deaths including long-term care worker

An employee of a long-term care home in Windsor-Essex has passed away after contracting COVID-19.

The 60-year-old woman is the second employee of the sector to die after contracting the virus.

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit reported her death along with two others on Wednesday, bringing the total number of lives lost to COVID-19 in Windsor-Essex to 348.

"It's hard to see all these deaths. With the worker, when I found out this morning, it is difficult to see that the deaths continue in our community," said CEO and Chief Nursing Officer Theresa Marentette. "I do hope with the vaccine we can continue to roll it out and that it will protect people."

The health unit also reported another 26 new cases of the virus in the region. There are 297 active cases of COVID-19.

Local hospitals are treating 45 patients with COVID-19. Eleven patients are in the intensive care unit.
