Windsor woman turns a loonie into $100K

An extra dollar spent on lottery tickets resulted in a big windfall for a Windsor grandmother.

Diana Damphousse bet an extra dollar on the January 15 Lotto Max drawing and matched the last six out of the seven Encore numbers in order to collect a $100,000 prize.

Damphousse said she was checking a bunch of her tickets at the store when the OLG mechanism went off.

"All of a sudden I see ‘Big Winner, $100,000’. I gave it to the clerk and the machine froze," said Damphousse, 76. "Everyone was congratulating me, it was really fun."

Upon collecting her prize this week at the Ontario Lottery and Gaming (OLG) Prize Centre in Toronto, Damphousse said the roller-coaster many people were on this past year convinced her to put her winnings aside.

"One thing the last year has reminded me of is that you never know what the future holds, so I’ve decided to save it for the future," said Damphousse.

The winning ticket was purchased at the Zehrs supermarket on Manning Road in Tecumseh.

Encore can be played in conjunction with most OLG lottery games for an extra looney. There are 22 possible winning combinations, ranging from $2 to a grand prize of $1-million.
