Health unit confirms possible COVID variant exposure

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit has reported a potential exposure point for a variant of the coronavirus.

The possible exposure was identified at the FreshCo store on Huron Church Road near Tecumseh Road West, on February 14 between noon and 1 p.m., and it involves a COVID-19 variant of concern. As is the procedure to address privacy concerns, the health unit has not disclosed who was affected.

Medical Officer of Health Doctor Wajid Ahmed has asked anyone who may have visited the store at this day and time to self-monitor for symptoms.

The typical self-monitoring period is 14 days. However, a health unit spokesman told Blackburn News that the alert was issued due to the exposure involving a variant of concern. The alert will remain active until Monday, March 8.

The FreshCo exposure alert is the third that is currently active in Windsor-Essex, and the only one involving a variant of concern. The others were reported at a PetSmart store in south Windsor on Wednesday, the other at the Ouellette Avenue Pharmacy in Windsor over the weekend.

Anyone who experiences symptoms should contact their health care provider for further instructions, or dial 211.
