Windsor-Essex has highest vaccination rate in the province

According to its medical officer of health, the Windsor-Essex Region has the highest vaccination rate in the province on a per capita basis.

Dr. Wajid Ahmed told reporters Monday that about 4.74 per cent of the local population has received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.

With the current vaccine clinics, there are about 1,000 doses of the vaccine administered daily in Windsor Essex.

"We can do better, but at least knowing we are ahead of many other regions of the province, that gives me a little bit more comfort. But, we will continue to expedite the vaccine and get a level of protection to our community," said Dr. Ahmed.

Ahmed anticipates the region will receive 12,000 doses of vaccines a week by the end of March.

On Monday, the Windsor Essex County Health Unit reported 51 new cases of COVID-19 in the region. Of the new cases, 21 are outbreak-related, 10 are close contacts of confirmed cases, three are community-acquired, and 17 are still under investigation.

There are now 262 active cases in the community.

There have been 28 cases identified as COVID-19 variants to date. Dr. Ahmed said the majority of those were identified within the last 7-10 days and he believes the cases have been contained.
