Windsor Essex records 13,299 COVID-19 cases in one year

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit has reported 13,299 cases of COVID-19 since the global pandemic started one year ago.

The health unit reported 39 new cases Thursday. Among the new cases, 13 are close contacts of confirmed cases, seven are outbreak-related, four are community-acquired, and 15 are still under investigation.

There are 281 active cases in the community, while 12,623 cases are now resolved. Windsor-Essex hospitals are treating 37 people with the virus, eight of whom are in the intensive care unit.

The health unit also reported one new death from COVID-19. A man in his 70s passed away after testing positive for the virus. He is the 395th Windsor Essex resident to die from the virus.

The health unit is monitoring 15 active outbreaks in the community.

Immunization for frontline healthcare workers and the 80+ population continues. To date, a total of 35,435 doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents. Of those, 11,775 residents have received both doses.
