The University of Windsor has identified one asymptomatic case of COVID-19 after doing over 160 tests because wastewater screening detected the virus.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, a team of researchers at the Univerity of Windsor has been collecting wastewater samples throughout the region as part of an early detection study. On Saturday, wastewater testing detected the virus at the University of Windsor's Alumni Hall.
“Wastewater testing is a very proactive way to identify the presence of COVID-19 in a building’s residents and gives us a chance to interrupt further spread of the disease or a potential outbreak,” said Dr. Mike McKay.
The university immediately enacted its COVID-19 protocols and placed residents under a modified quarantine.
Students and staff were tested on Sunday and only one came back positive for COVID-19. The individual has been relocated to the University of Windsor's isolation centre.
The remaining residents have been told to avoid close contact with each other and limit trips outside their residences to essential outings only.
