Vaccination efforts expand with Amherstburg clinic

Over 70,000 residents in Windsor and Essex County have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.

That number will climb as the fifth COVID-19 clinic opens in Amherstburg this week and appointments are already completely booked for the first three days of operation.  Appointments at the clinics are available for Windsor-Essex residents 70-years-old and older.

"It's a great treat to see the vaccination efforts is ongoing and we continue to vaccinate our community. Looking at this facility [the Libro Credit Union Recreation Centre] with the opportunity for some of the county residents in this area get the vaccine, it's really a great opportunity," said Medical Officer of Health Dr. Wajid Ahmed.

Currently, the health unit and Windsor Regional Hospital vaccinate around 1,500 residents a day at the mass vaccination sites.

"We're only getting between 10,000 and 14,000 a week and we're using all of that through our various channels," said CEO and Chief Nursing Officer Theresa Marentette.

Residents are also receiving vaccines through local pharmacies.

To date, 60,768 residents have received one vaccine dose and another 12,083 people have received both doses.

Vaccine appointments will continue to be available throughout the upcoming Easter holiday weekend. The sites operated by Windsor Regional Hospital will continue to vaccinate residents all weekend while the WFCU Centre and the county locations will close on Sunday and Monday.
